About
I have been copyediting academic writing since 2018.
Prior to this I worked as a freelancer in a variety of different areas, some of which I still continue in parallel with my editing work. I have been a professional musician since the age of 16, and alongside this I have worked at various times as a journalist, web developer, AV technician, and SEO, as well as running my own online businesses selling my handmade jewellery and digital sheet music for my compositions and arrangements.
While this background might appear to be made up of fairly disparate elements, most of these things constitute a similar process for me: take a piece of material, and refine it into the most authentic, distilled version of itself.
I love copyediting because it allows me to consume and understand all kinds of new information while collaborating with others as part of a creative process. I will always try to make the fewest and most sensitive changes possible to your work; simultaneously I will care about its quality and accuracy as much as if it were my own.
I think that LLMs and other so-called AI tools used in the linguistic sphere are unethically produced, socially irresponsible, and environmentally destructive. They also don't work very well and are no replacement for a human copyeditor. If you are a writer, I hope you think this too, and if you've read this far, that you're looking for an editor who is not going to inflict them on your work.
